Job Purpose
The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) is seeking to hire a Research Fellow in Information and Communication Technology. We are looking for a talented and ambitious investigator to join the research group of Assoc. Prof. Michael T. Gastner to work on an exciting project funded by the Singapore Ministry of Education titled 'Designing mobile-friendly cartograms for visualizing geospatial data.' This project is co-led by Assoc. Prof. Chen-Chieh Feng (National University of Singapore) and Asst. Prof. Simon Perrault (Singapore University of Technology and Design). The appointed Postdoctoral Fellow will develop new cartogram software suitable for interactive use on mobile devices. The objectives are (1) conducting human-subject experiments to test how cartograms are used on electronic devices and (2) enhancing cartographic algorithms and thematic map designs. We anticipate that the newly developed software will be used by educators and national statistics agencies to communicate geospatial data with intuitive and engaging visualizations.
The successful candidate is expected to begin duties no later than 2 January 2024.
Applicants Should Have
A PhD in computer science, statistics, geography, or a closely related field. Strong research skills, as demonstrated by publications in internationally recognized journals or conference proceedings. Experience working with various types of geospatial data, understanding data structures, and employing appropriate data analysis techniques to extract meaningful insights.
Key Competencies
Proficiency in at least two of the following programming languages: C++, Python, R, and JavaScript. Knowledge of experimental design, GIS, and computational geometry will be advantageous. Strong analytical, critical, and creative thinking skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Attention to detail. Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with people within and external to the university. A self-directed learner who believes in continuous learning and development. Proficient in technical writing and presentation. Strong initiative and a sense of ownership of work.
Major Challenges
Rapidly gain familiarity with relevant cartographic and statistical literature. Adapt data visualization to mobile device constraints. Design intuitive user interactions and usability. Evaluate and validate the effectiveness of implemented user interactions. Develop prototypes quickly and implement changes as requested by the research team. Obtain ethics approval for human-subject experiments from the Institutional Review Board. Take a leadership role for subprojects. Be prepared to work independently. Respond constructively to criticism from colleagues and external reviewers. Communicate effectively and professionally in speech and writing. Be prepared for interdisciplinary work and research.
