Bolts are a form of threaded fasteners that are paired with external male threads (usually in nut form). Bolts are closely related to, and often confused with screws.

Bolts are often used to make locked connections. This locked connection is a combination of a nut that uses axial clamping force and a bolt rod that functions as a fixing rod, tightening the connection against the side sliding force. For this reason, many bolts have plain, unthreaded rods (called long handles) because this shape makes the fixing rod better and stronger.
